Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) President Raffaele Chiulli yesterday launched a new electric boating championship, with Extreme E and Formula E founder Alejandro Agag and former McLaren Motorsport Director Rodi Basso.
The launch event, held at the prestigious Monaco Yacht Club in the presence of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, included the unveiling of design concepts for the futuristic RaceBird boats being developed for the Series. These unique boats incorporate hydrofoil technology, will be driven by single pilots and will be capable of achieving breathtaking speeds of up to 60 knots – 111 km/hr or 69 mph.
The UIM E1 World Electric Powerboat Series, which will run in direct association with the Extreme E off-road electric motorsport series, will be comprised of racing on short courses at prestigious city-based and stunning remote locations around the world.
With extensive sustainability goals, the series will act also as a technology test-bed for marine electric technology, with the aim to improve all kind of electric watercraft to support a transition to more sustainable water mobility globally.
