SportAccord and GAISF President Raffaele Chiulli yesterday presented the GAISF Sustainability Award to World Sailing Head of Sustainability Dan Reading at the Monaco Yacht Club.
The inaugural GAISF Sustainability Award was presented to World Sailing at the first-ever virtual GAISF General Assembly in 2020. The award was launched in 2019 to encourage International Sports Federations to use their global platforms to combat climate change and educate their communities about the importance of sustainability.
The world’s first overall winner of the award, World Sailing, was recognised for its Sustainability Agenda 2030 which was unanimously ratified by the organisation in 2018. This ambitious commitment to a sustainable future outlines how sailing will contribute to the United Nation’s Sustainability Development Goals, creating a sustainable legacy that spans from grassroots sailing clubs to elite competition.
President Chiulli said:
“It was an absolute pleasure to have an opportunity to present World Sailing with the GAISF Sustainability Award in person. This award has shone a spotlight on the incredible efforts of our Members in contributing to a more sustainable future, and World Sailing has been exemplary in its commitment to creating a sustainable legacy for sailing.
“Of course, we would have much preferred to present this well-deserved award to World Sailing in person last year, but given the challenges we were all facing this was unfortunately not possible. However, as we slowly move towards an increase in sports events and industry gatherings, I look forward to the return of more in person meetings with GAISF Members and the global sports community.”
