Sport and Liverpool City Region are synonymous – with three famous football clubs in Everton, Liverpool and Tranmere, rugby league champions St Helens, home to Open Championship golf courses at Royal Birkdale and Royal Liverpool and horse racing at Haydock Park and Aintree, home of the world’s greatest steeplechase, the Randox Grand National. From boxing, athletics, swimming, tennis and cycling – sport is in our DNA and it offers the perfect destination for sports events.
In recent years the region has hosted the 2019 Vitality Netball World Cup and the 2022 World Gymnastics Championships – both at the world-class M&S Bank Arena, and The Open Golf Championships at Royal Liverpool in 2023. Looking forward the Open Golf Championships will return to the region in 2026 at Royal Birkdale and Everton’s new stadium, located on the banks of the River Mersey at Bramley Moore Dock, has been named as one of the nine UK and Ireland host cities for UEFA EURO 2028
